Hold that shot! AI to the rescue!

Updated: Dec 17, 2024

AI auto-fill in popular editing software is helping with the age-old dilemma of "cutting" your shot too soon.

The first tip you learn as a camera operator - aside from removing the lens-cap -is to hold your shot. When editing footage, there needs to be time between takes to transition.

Cutting your shot too soon means something is gong to suffer. A good 10-15 seconds of roll after the action ensures your editor won't be left in a lurch. Sometimes the talent or crew can hurt a take by speaking or moving too soon, causing editors to scrub and analyze frames for longer periods of times to find the perfect cut point.

Several things can cause a shot to be cut too abruptly, such as talent actions or camera movement.

But if you don't have that extra footage, what to do? In the past you could stretch a clip out by slowing it down or inserting extra frames. Now, with the help of AI, you can add a few extra "generated frames" to the end of a clip-or in some cases, generate entire clips of B-Roll.

In addition to object removal and keying, Adobe's Premiere (beta) Firefly AI can generate frames for audio and video, so your transitions can be less abrupt if you don't have the footage. But be warned..

calculates as the next logical process, but you may disagree. It's also limited to a few frames, so if your clip needs a lot more content, you may still need to reshoot. But it's a fun addition to the editing toolbox and with a little creativity you can push your clips-and projects- to even greater lengths.

AI tools for editing are only part of the production process at I'AMedia. Our video prodcution services offer a mix of current and traditional solutions to your video needs. And check out the fun video below created with a AI app. "Basement Doctor's on the job!"
